Only One More Week ‘Till Halloween!!

We are super excited for Halloween here at the Kendallville Public Library! We have our pumpkin decorating contest under way, we have fall decorations up, and we have our spooky Halloween story time in full swing. Our stories this week were: Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson, Hallo-Wiener by Dav Pilkey, and The 13 Nights of Halloween by Guy Vasilovich.

Our songs this week were:

Autumn and October

When autumn comes
And the days of crisp October
Then comes a night
Weird things are seen;
Witches on broomsticks,
And glowing Jack-o’lanterns,
Peer through the windows —
Hallowe’en!

Then boys and girls
Gather round the fire a-glowing,
Faces are painted
Bright blue and green
Apples are bobbing,
And gypsies telling fortunes,
Fun and myst’ry,
Hallowe’en!

Jack ‘O’ Lanterns

In the moonlight glowing,
Jack-o-lanterns sit;
Eerie shadows throwing
As the moonbeams flit;
Black cats up on fences
Howl at the night;
Witches riding broomsticks,
What a scary sight!

Our craft this week was spooky ghost. You will need: a paper plate, a black marker, a red marker, a white crayon, glue, and tissue paper.

Draw a face on the paper plate using the black marker. Two eyes, one mouth, and a nose if they want one. Use a white crayon on the eyes to make the white part.  Then draw hash marks in red on their cheeks. Next cut long strips of white tissue paper. Have at least five strips of two inches wide. Glue the tissue paper onto the back of the plate and glue another plate behind it if you want to hide where the tissue paper is glued. Next cut out two arms from a white piece of paper and glue those on as well. Poke a hole in the top of the plate and ad add a string so that your child’s craft is a Halloween decoration!
