Counting with Monsters

This week I found a couple books with counting that I just couldn’t resist. They were: You Can Count on Monsters, Zero, and Counting Monsters 1,2,3. The monster books were silly while the book Zero has a great message about being yourself and not trying to change to be like others.

Our songs/rhymes this week were:

5 little men in a flying saucer
looked around the world one day
They looked left and right
but they didn’t like the sight
so one man flew a way
4 little men in a flying saucer……and so on till you have 0

How Old am I?

How old am I,
1 or 2 or 3 or 4,
5 or 6 or 7 or 8,
9 or 10 or 11 or 12?
How old am I?
20, 30, 40, 50,
60, 70, 80, 90?
How old am I?
How old are you?

Our craft this week was a counting octopus. We did a lot of monster craft a few months ago so I though an octopus would be a good alternative. Plus the octopus has 8 legs which help with counting and practicing our numbers.

Have the kids color a toilet paper roll with crayons and cut 8 legs about 3/4 up. Next, have them write 1-8 on each leg. Knowing numbers is good but it is also beneficial to know how to write them. After the numbers are done curl the legs by rolling them very tight all the way up. Then simply decorate the octopus friend with anything you want.
