This Little Piggy’s Book of Manners

We continued learning about manners this week, with a focus on manners in the animal kingdom. We began story time with a little rhyme:

Open, shut them.
(On “open,” place both hands in front of you, palms facing away and opening them wide.
On “shut them,” clench hands into fists.)
Open, shut them.
Give a little clap.
(Clap hands.)
Open, shut them
Open, shut them.
Put them in your lap.
(Fold hands and put them in your lap.)

Our first story was Rules of the Wild: An Unruly Book of Manners by Bridget Levin. This story asks children to imagine what kind of rules they would have to follow if their parents were wild animals. Our next story was Kathryn Madeline Allen’s This Little Piggy’s Book of Manners, which contrasts the behavior of a very well-mannered little piggy with the behavior of a very rude and thoughtless little piggy.

We took a dance break after our stories. This week’s songs were “Spaghetti Legs” and “Silly Dance Contest,” both by Jim Gill.

The kids worked on their motor skills by playing a few rounds of modified Red Light Green Light. No running, just walking.

After playing with toys and puzzles for a while, we made our craft:

Five Little Piggies

The kids had fun customizing their piggies, adding bows and eyebrows and snouts.

The library is closed next Tuesday (4/23/2013), but there will be story time on the Tuesday after that (4/30/2013). We’ll be reading about monster manners. Hope to see you there!
