Our theme this week was dinosaurs! We started by reading Edwina, The Dinosaur Who Didn’t Know She Was Extinct, by one of my favorite authors, Mo Willems. Reginald is jealous of all the attention Edwina the dinosaur gets, so he sets off to prove that she doesn’t exist. Will he manage to convince his friends? What will happen to Edwina if he does?
Our next books were Dinosaur Roar! by Paul and Henrietta Stickland and a pop-up book called Dinosaur Stomp!, also by Paul Stickland. These books are full of colorful illustrations and lots of opportunities for roaring and stomping and mimicking actions and sounds.
After we read about roaring, stomping dinosaurs, we decided to try acting like them. We came up with some dinosaur actions (roaring, stamping, chomping, running, walking) and then rolled our giant foam die to decide how many or how long we would do each action.
We danced to “Jump Up, Turn Around,” and “Spaghetti Legs,” then split up into small groups and went to activity stations where I had set up different games.
Our craft was a baby dinosaur hatching out of an egg:
The baby dinosaur is from Dibujos, a Spanish language site with tons of coloring pages which can be colored online or printed out and colored by hand.
We’ll be taking a break from programming during August, but story time will start up again in September. Hope to see you there!
