Square Cat

This was our second week of pets story time. We read two books, one about dogs and one about cats. Our first book was Say Hello to Zorro! by Carter Goodrich. Mister Bud is a sometimes grumpy dog who is very set in his ways. What will happen when his owners bring home Zorro, a sometimes bossy dog with a schedule of his own? Our second book was Square Cat by Elizabeth Schoonmaker, about a cat who is tired of being square instead of round.

After our stories, the kids were allowed to visit the different stations I’d set up.

Station 1: A magnetic shape maze.

Station 2: Foam building blocks.

Station 3: Plain white paper, scissors, glue sticks, and copies of this printable cut out shapes template from Mr Printables. The kids cut out and glued the shapes to the paper to make animals or designs.

Station 4: Our very own Square Cat! Before story time, I wrapped white paper around a cardboard box, taping it to the inside of the box to keep it in one place. I also cut out strips of paper for the tail and two triangle ears. Once the kids had painted and decorated the cat and the paint was dry, I taped the ears and tail to the body. I used a black paint pen to draw the nose and mouth, but a permanent marker would work just as well. Here’s our finished Square Cat:

I think it turned out really cute!

There will be more pet stories and activities next week. Hope to see you there!
