Since we’ll be taking a break from MAPS in May, this month I’ll be posting weekly about some of our favorite books and activities!
Hug Machine by Scott Campbell is a cute, funny story about a little boy who loves to give hugs. He is so good at giving hugs, in fact, that he can hug a porcupine or even a giant whale. He is the Hug Machine, and nothing can get in his way.
I was first drawn to this story by the illustrations, which are done in soft, pretty watercolors. There’s a lot of humor in Campbell’s art, most of it found in the character’s facial expressions. The Hug Machine smiles earnestly as he hugs people, dogs, and trees. A bear looks both surprised and delighted to be hugged. The story is equally strong, and its cheerful sweetness would make it a great read for Mother’s Day!
